“101 Things To Do With A Dead Horse” is the title of a section in Vicki León’s book, Uppity Women Of The New World.
It’s the short tale of Marie Dorian, a full-blooded Sioux who married a French trapper around 1795.
Marie and her husband got hired as interpreters for the Missouri-to-Oregon expedition of John Jacob Astor, a fur-hungry German-American business magnate.
This particular expedition had its share of bad luck, however. Marie and her husband left Missouri in the spring. By December the group had barely reached eastern Oregon and they were starving. In addition to walking through snow sometimes waist-deep, and caring for her two children, Marie had to stop on December 31, 1811 to give birth to her third child. The baby died, but Marie and her family made it to Fort Astoria on the Oregon coast.
Soon after arriving, Marie’s husband, Pierre, left to trap furs, dragging Marie and the kids with him. Not unlike the disaster of 1811, in 1814, the family was attacked by Malheur Indians; they killed Pierre, leaving Marie a widow with two children to care for in the wilderness. Two kids and two horses in tow, Marie found a place to hide out in the Blue Mountains. The Dorions were snowed in for fifty-three days.
“Luckily, Marie carried a copy of 101 Things to Do with Ye Horsemeat.”
The horses provided food and shelter (a horsehide tent) for Marie and her kids until March, when she was able to snowshoe out to find help: She met some Walla Walla Indians with more on the menu than horse meat.
The point?
Men and women have always figured out a way to survive and everyone who came before you had to do it in a much tougher era. Think about it.
